The Client Decision Journey

How Clients Choose a Lawyer

A founder facing a contract dispute searches for a commercial lawyer in Delhi, opens two practice area pages, and checks each partner's LinkedIn for writing on cases like hers. Before calling, she asks ChatGPT which firms handle commercial arbitration. Each step is a test your firm passes or fails without knowing it happened.

Lucien Solutions helps law firms by:

  • 01Building websites that explain each practice area in plain language.
  • 02Making the firm visible in search results and AI answers.
  • 03Growing partners' thought leadership on LinkedIn.
  • 04Tracking which channels produce enquiries and which produce matters.
Industry Updates

What Changed for Lawyer Marketing

On 17 July 2026, the Bar Council of India issued a Social Media and Digital Ethics circular and asked State Bar Councils to enforce it immediately. It treats promotional reels, courtroom content, influencer collaborations, monetized legal content, and client testimonials as possible indirect advertising or solicitation under Rule 36, and requires Digital Ethics Committees with complaint channels.

The Supreme Court's Intervention

Three days earlier, the Supreme Court issued notice to the Bar Council in Anil Pandey v. Bar Council of India, a petition seeking strict enforcement of the same rule.

  • What Remains Permitted

What remains permitted is clear enough to build on:

    • A website with the particulars Rule 36 allows
    • Legal awareness content
    • Academic discussion
    • Neutral case law updates
A Bar Council of India Social Media and Digital Ethics Circular dated 17 July 2026 on a desk beside a gavel
  • How US and UK Rules Differ

US and UK firms work under more permissive rules.

    • United States: The ABA Model Rules allow advertising that is not false or misleading.
    • United Kingdom: The SRA allows advertising to the public while barring unsolicited approaches to members of the public.
The US Capitol and Big Ben under American and British flags, with a gavel on law books

Agencies still selling reels and testimonials to Indian advocates are selling risk.

The Visibility Gap

Why Most Legal Marketing Fails Law Firms

Most digital marketing for law firms in India, and much of it elsewhere, applies general marketing habits to a regulated profession.

A law firm website on a laptop surrounded by notes marked Promotional Content, Unchecked Ads, Anonymous Content, Pages That Describe the Firm and Invisible Partners
  1. 01.Promotional Content: Reels and posts that now draw complaints under the 2026 circular.
  2. 02.Unchecked Ads: Paid campaigns run with no check on where the firm may advertise.
  3. 03.Anonymous Content: Articles with no advocate behind them, which clients and AI assistants discount.
  4. 04.Pages That Describe the Firm: Practice pages that never answer the client's question.
  5. 05.Invisible Partners: Partners missing from LinkedIn and from AI answers about their own field.
What Works

What Makes Legal Marketing Work Now

Visibility That Does Not Depend on Advertising

A proper website, found through search by people already looking for you, is the kind of passive presence Rule 36 has allowed since 2008.

Thought Leadership the Rules Still Allow

LinkedIn commentary on judgments and legal awareness writing build authority without soliciting work, and they produce our strongest legal results.

Advocate Profiles Search Engines and AI Can Verify

Enrollment details, practice areas, and publications, consistent across your website and LinkedIn, help search engines and AI assistants confirm who you are. We keep Indian advocates off paid listing platforms, which the Madras High Court held in 2024 amount to touting.

Practice Pages Built Around Client Questions

A client searching "how to enforce an arbitral award in India" wants an answer first and a lawyer second. Pages built around that question earn both.

Jurisdiction Aware Campaigns

Paid search works for US and UK firms. For Indian advocates, we leave it out and spend on permitted channels.

The Lucien Difference

Why Law Firms Choose Lucien Solutions

Several of our team come from legal backgrounds, so we read the rules you practice under before we write a word, and we track circulars, rulings, and bar guidance as they change. We will also tell you when a channel is not worth the risk. For Indian advocates, that often means skipping reels, testimonials, and paid ads in favor of a website, search, and writing the rules allow.

Who We Serve

Legal Marketing for Different Practices

Law books titled Arbitration, Litigation and Dispute Resolution beside a gavel and scales

Disputes, Arbitration, and Litigation

Clients in a dispute want a lawyer who knows their forum. Forum specific pages and judgment commentary carry the most weight.

A globe and brass scales on a desk in front of a city skyline

Corporate, IP, and Capital Markets

In house teams compare firms over weeks, so LinkedIn commentary keeps you on the shortlist. IP practices can see our IP law firm marketing page.

US Practices

Personal injury and immigration firms can advertise, and competition for clicks is heavy. Paid search, local SEO, and fast intake decide most cases, and immigration firms can see our immigration law firm marketing page.

Solo and First Generation Advocates

Without a family name or an established chamber, a credible website and steady LinkedIn writing do the work referrals once did. Both are permitted.

FAQ

Everything You Need Before Starting Your Growth Journey

Can lawyers in India advertise?

Not in the commercial sense. Rule 36 bars advocates from soliciting work or advertising, directly or indirectly. Since 2008, they may publish a website with set particulars, such as name, contact details, enrollment, and practice areas.

What did the Bar Council's July 2026 social media circular change?

It directed State Bar Councils to act, through new Digital Ethics Committees, against promotional reels, courtroom content, influencer collaborations, and client testimonials. Legal awareness content and neutral case law updates remain permitted.

Is SEO permitted for advocates?

No rule mentions SEO. A compliant website found through search fits the passive presence Rule 36 allows; the risk sits in superlatives, testimonials, or promised results.

Can you run Google Ads for my law firm?

It depends on where you practice. In the US and UK, yes, within bar and SRA rules. For advocates practicing in India, paid ads count as advertising under Rule 36, so we do not run them.

Is LinkedIn content allowed for advocates?

Yes, when it informs. Judgment commentary, legal awareness posts, and academic writing fit the circular. Posts about client wins, fees, or invitations to hire you do not.

How long before we see enquiries?

Website and profile fixes show movement within weeks. Search and LinkedIn usually take four to six months to produce steady enquiries.
